Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
