The Leading Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

At first glance, Lux could seem more like a difficult academic challenge rather than the latest pop project by an artist who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop star. Divided into four separate movements and voiced in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, frequently by way of the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone makes the work of contemporary pop stars seem rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in transcend dry intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, with complete credit belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, its ambitions feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that truly raises her fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she is tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful spirit shines clearly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for several minutes. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a comically exaggerated string crescendo crashes down with cartoonish force. The song immediately shifts to the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in you rarely quite know—or even wish to know—what it is going to next."

Nearly each song ends in a completely different point from how it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off moody and brooding, with menacing vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

A key balancing act of the album involves straddling the line of bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is no coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in English swells on a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spins upward. This feat is echoed on another expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. This is an abundant well of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other big releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
