No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
