The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
