The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
