The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
